Review: The Killer B’ Movie Collection

DVD: The Killer B’ Movie Collection

This fantastic 9 disc DVD set from Fabulous Films is an essential purchase for anyone (like myself) who loves sci-fi movies from in and around the 1950’s. It contains: The Blob (1958), The Angry Red Planet (1959), Dr. Cyclops (1940), Reptilicus (1961), The Creature Walks Among Us (1956), The Deadly Mantis (1957), The Time Travelers (1964), The Beast With A Million Eyes (1955) and The Man From Planet X (1951).

Some of these movies I have been privileged to review on their individual releases, and you can read all about Dr.Cyclops, The Angry Red Planet, Reptilicus, The Beast With A Million Eyes, The Time Travelers, and The Man From Planet X by clicking on their names and reading my thoughts on them. The remaining 3 movies of The Blob, The Creature Walks Among Us, and The Deadly Mantis, are all equally spectacular.

Surely you’ve heard of Steve McQueen battling a giant blob, even if you haven’t seen it? And if you thought the story of ‘The Creature’ began and ended at the Black Lagoon, then think again. While The Deadly Mantis of course gives yet another oversized insect for the unsuspecting human race to battle.

The above movies and other similar examples are ones which I grew up watching, usually on Sunday television with a bottle of pop (saving the bottle to take back to the shop for some money back…who remembers THAT!?) and a packet of salt n’ shake crisps. I was never scared, despite the size and ferocity of the monsters or mad scientists on the screen. These movies transported me to other worlds, other times, and a present day where ANYTHING could happen…yet ultimately good would no doubt triumph over evil.

In an age of CGI where you never quite know what is real and what isn’t, there is a never ending charm to these movies where the effects consisted of stop-motion models, crude puppetry, people in ill fitting monster suits, and crazy scientists who could twirl a moustache in the most sinister of ways.

Treat yourself to this amazing boxset and settle back to watch 713 minutes of other worldly entertainment. Highly recommended.
