Review: Bachelor Party
Blu-ray & DVD: Bachelor Party (1984)
For those of you (like myself) who were old enough to watch Bachelor Party upon its original release (either at the cinema or on VHS), a rewatch of this Fabulous Films Blu-ray/DVD will bring back fond memories of that wild decade of the 80βs and the over the top movies that it spawned.
For everyone else, youβll probably sit there with thoughts of βWTF is happeningβΒ spinning through your head.
Bachelor Party is about as 80βs as a movie gets. So if you like a lotΒ of cheese with your onscreen action, then be prepared to have it constantly shoved into your face.
The (admittedly thin) plot has confirmed bachelor Rick (Tom Hanks) telling his group of bachelor friends that he is going to get married to Debbie (Tawny Kitaen) and finally settle down.
At first shocked at this news, his friends come around to the idea when they realise that they can throw the mother of all bachelor parties.
Of course, things donβt go to plan.
The usual 80βs comedy tropes of βboyfriend not getting on with girlfriends dadβ, βweedy nerd gets laidβ, βall plans never go as plannedβ, and βgratuitous female nudityβ are all present and correct. Though βa donkey sniffing lines of cocaineβ is not something that you see very often.
A young Tom Hanks was still mostly associated with comedy roles at this point in his career, but thereβs no doubting his acting chops and the bright future that lay before him. He plays Rick with a playful charm that is just the right side of not being an annoying twat.
Bachelor Party is definitely βof its ageβ and may well not resonate with everyone, but for those who remember or have a fondness for the 80βs, this wacky comedy will have you laughing at the constant stream of outrageous situations that play out before you.
