Review: Evil Dead (2013) 4K UHD
Making its UK UHD debut on 19th October, with a 2-disc Collector’s Edition featuring a 4K restoration, new artwork by Krishna Bala Shenoi, the Theatrical and Unrated cuts of the film, a host of extras and a 64-page booklet, is the 2013 version of Evil Dead.
As someone who grew up watching the original Sam Raimi trilogy, I was of course hesitant when this movie was first announced as being in production, but of course went to watch it in the cinema.
So here we are, 13 years later and available to buy on 4K UHD here in the UK.
Co-written by Fede Alvarez (who also directs it), Rodo Sayagues and Sam Raimi, this is a reboot of the Evil Dead world rather than a remake, though there are familiar threads within it that will bring a smile to any old gits like myself who wore out their VHS tapes back in the day watching Ash going crazy in the cabin…the use of the original car probably eliciting the biggest smile.
The violence and gore have been ramped up, especially in the included unrated version, but thankfully the movie contains characters that you can have some empathy for, so when the blood begins to flow, you actually feel for them, rather than just cheering the gore effects.
A lean 90 minutes running time means that it doesn’t outstay its welcome, while also giving enough time to set the tone of the movie and establish the characters.
The 4K picture is great, with crisp colours and great contrast, enabling all of the creepy goings on in the dark to be clearly visible. Put that along with an immersive soundtrack that has all sorts of effects whipping through your speakers, and you have the perfect combination for watching a horror movie in the dark at home.
Add in some very enjoyable special features and you have a package that is a fantastic addition to any horror movie lovers collection.
