DVD: Namatjira Project (2017) On seeing this latest release from Umbrella Entertainment, I assumed it was a documentary about a contemporary Australian artist I’d personally never heard of; Albert Namatjira. I very wrongly thought it would be a retrospective of his work, but instead I got a very hard hitting documentary more of less about the […]
DVD: A Chorus Line (1985) I LOVE Musicals, oh hang on, a bit TOO broad. I love most musicals. I’m thinking On the Town, West Side Story, yes, even La La Land. And you know what I love MORE than musicals? People dancing. No I’m not talking ‘Strictly‘ dancing with the stars here, no proper […]
DVD: Breaker Morant (1980) I think people won’t really know Edward Woodward unless they are ‘of a certain age’, then they’ll mainly remember him as David Callan (in Callan) and as the original Equalizer Robert McCall. Movie fans will possibly remember him as the virgin human sacrifice in The Wicker Man. Definitely a ‘man’s man’ […]
Blu-ray & DVD: Montparnasse 19 (1958) Italian artist Amadeo Modigliani (Gérard Philipe), leads the typical bohemian artiste existence in Paris, and in between drinking himself to a stupor, and having sex with most of the women he knows, he paints, but is unable to sell any of his work due to his style. I’d actually […]
DVD: Detectorists (Series 3) (2017) It is with a genuinely heavy heart that I tell you that this series of Detectorists is to be the last. Over the last 2 series (all of which I’ve reviewed) we’ve followed the adventures, or rather middle aged musings of Lance (Toby Jones) and Andy (Mackenzie Crook). Andy and […]
DVD: Love, Lies and Records (2017) Kate (Ashley Jensen) is a registrar who works full time while coping with grumpy teenagers at home, office politics and also does some amateur sleuthing on the side. Living with (not married to) a policeman, she is popular, warm and kind, and everyone loves her. Well, everyone apart from […]
DVD: Eagle of the Ninth (1977) Eagle of the Ninth, originally a novel written for kids by Rosemary Sutcliff in 1954 is a story set in Roman Britain in the 2nd century AD, and tells the tale of our hero, a young Roman officer named Marcus Flavius Aquila (perfect casting of Anthony Higgins, who stars […]
Blu-ray: The Apartment (1960) C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) is a man on the make, and the only way he can get ahead in his company is by loaning out his apartment to various bosses who take their mistresses there (instead of a hotel) for sex. He waits outside, in all weathers, patiently waiting for his […]
Blu-ray: Carrie (1976) Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is a shy 16 year old girl who lives with her ‘eccentric’ religiously obsessed mother in a small American town. Carrie is bullied by her contemporaries, mainly because of her annoyingly odd mother Margaret (Piper Laurie), wild haired with a mad-but-sexy-vibe, who turns up at her ‘friends’ houses […]
DVD: Medici – Masters of Florence. Season 1 (2016) Set in 15th Century Florence, Cosimo Medici (Richard Madden) has inherited the Bank of Medici from his father Giovanni (Dustin Hoffman), who has been mysteriously poisoned. Through various flashbacks we are taken back to see the lives of young Cosimo and his brother Lorenzo and their […]
