Review: High Road to China
Eve Tozer (Bess Armstrong) is an ultra rich, ‘wild’ flapper living the high-life in 1920s Istanbul on her daddy’s income, but after a threat to her inheritance, she needs to straighten up and find her father, Bradley Tozer (Wildfred Brimley), before he’s declared dead and she loses her inheritance to his scheming business partner, Bentik, and she’s got 12 days to do it in.
Eve hires World War I ace pilot Patrick O’Malley (a young, gorgeous Tom Selleck) and his aircraft to fly her to wherever her dad is.
It’s another one of those ‘annoying woman getting in trouble unnecessarily, and them nearly getting killed because she has to prove she’s amazing’ stories. Oh yes, and they hate each other. Which means they are bound to end up as a couple.
Given to Selleck as a consolation of sorts for missing out on the lead in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and seen as a poor imitation of that film even though it was written years before, unfortunately, this isn’t a great film.
The character of Eve is just annoying and distracting. Probably would have been a much better film if we’d just followed O’Malley around getting drunk than listen to get squawking.
However, Dave at 60MW Towers rather liked it.
(I did indeed, and while I agree with Tina that the character of Eve does get quite annoying due to her excessive shouting and complaining, which does become rather grating after a while, I found the film had a certain charm to it that kept me hooked until the end.
While it is definitely not a top tier film, it’s worth watching for anyone that hasn’t seen it yet – Dave).
