Review: Interview With the Vampire 4K UHD
Based on the novel of the same name, written by Anne Rice, Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire caused a huge stir when it was announced that Tom Cruise would be playing Lestat, the selfish, egotistical star of Rice’s vampire world. And at that time, I thought it was an odd choice for Cruise. Mainly because I couldn’t imagine him chomping down on Brad Pitt’s neck.
However, I’m pleased to say (in my opinion) Cruise made a great Lestat, as Pitt made a great Louis, all pouty and tortured.
This is one of the ‘gayest’ films made in mainstream cinema; that’s not a complaint, it’s as it should be. Rice’s novels are crammed with beautiful men all… ummm… sucking each other, and Jordan’s film is not only true to the book, but also has that soft sensual feel that Rice created so well.
It’s a wonderful film to look at, each scene is an oil painting, rich and dark, vibrant and candle-lit.
On a deeper level this is a film that deals with what it means to be human, and how to cope with death, but that all kind of fades into the background when you see Brad’s full lips and Tom chomping down on his neck. OOFFFFF(sorry). I LOVE this film, its not quite camp. It’s more ….Oh la la!
This 4K release allows for more details in the shadows, as well as showing off the sumptuous costumes and their colours in the best possible way.
