Review: 49 Miles More
Max (Reece Henderson); a struggling salesman who is unhappy with his job, prepares for an annual get together with his old University friends. However, he is slow “baggsying” who to pick up in the car and is left having to pick up Doug (Gregory Fung), the outsider of the group due to him being overzealous and unpredictable.
On the way to the reunion, Max’s car breaks down and he and Doug are left to walk the final 49 miles, during which they experience many different things, both good and bad.
49 Miles More is a low budget British buddy comedy that grew on me more and more as each minute ticked by. Alex’s calm demeanour slowly wearing down as Doug’s crazy decisions took them both into a variety of unpredictable situations, was balanced by the joy they both inevitably found, no matter what was thrown at them.
Doug’s over the top behaviour was initially a bit grating, but that soon changed into a love of the character as more of his background was revealed.
Subtle humorous moments, plus some (literal) toilet humour, had me smiling and laughing throughout. All climaxing in a wonderful end to the story that will long stay in the memory…something that can’t be said for a lot of films I watch.
Director and co-writer Alex Cox has crafted a film that unfortunately will be unseen by a lot of mainstream film viewers, but is a bit of a hidden gem for those that seek it out.
Recommended.
