Review: Teardown
The console release of Teardown has had me quite excited for a while now, with promo videos of total destruction whetting my appetite to unleash the berserker inside of me.
However, my excitement was tempered upon starting the game and discovering that there was no option to invert the Y axis, making it totally unplayable for me.
Thankfully though I could go into the Xbox settings and change the controller configuration from there…but this is something that I shouldn’t really have to do in 2023 and accessibility settings such as changing the look inversion should be standard in all games.
Once I’d got that sorted I went straight into the campaign mode, which I have to admit contained much more than I was expecting…which was just smashing things to pieces. Yet here you’re tasked with a variety of objectives, such as stealing/destroying items scattered across the map within a set time limit…especially after triggering the alarms. This makes you plan everything in advance, using the tools given to you (of which you unlock more as the game progresses) to create as clear a path as possible before donning your striped jumper and swag bag (both of those definitely not in the game).
As well as the campaign you can simply mess around in the sandbox mode and have some fun with the mods that are also available…though limited in number compared to what you can get on PC.
Teardown looks fantastic, and at times I was hesitant to destroy some of the buildings and environments as they looked so good…then the berserker in me kicked in and I went wild with a big smile on my face.
No look inversion and no multiplayer options are definite cons at the moment, but outweighed by the fun and thought provoking gameplay as you sit and plan your way through the missions, before laughing hysterically as it all comes together in a mass of crumbling buildings.
Decently priced, Teardown gives much more than blowing stuff up.
