Review: Blue
Digital & DVD: Blue (2017)
A fantastic companion piece to the previously reviewed \’Sharkwater Extinction\’, Sparky Pictures release another documentary that makes you take another look at the human race and the way in which we (mis)treat planet Earth.
Beginning with more footage of how the shark population is being decimated for the sake of lining peoples pockets with unlawful money, writer/director Karina Holden takes the viewer on a visually stunning journey through the world\’s oceans and the delicate balance of life therein which is being destroyed at a frightening rate.
It is not just life within the oceans which is being affected though, as the entire delicate food chain which relies upon each part of it to be stable, is being ripped apart by humankind greed and disregard of the one place we have to live.
Seeing once beautiful and unblemished beaches now strewn with multi-coloured pieces of plastic is a sight which has become all too often seen in news items, but it is the sight of rescued birds having their stomachs pumped and regurgitating a multitude of plastic pieces which really hits home just how much we are destroying everything around us.
It was an absolute pleasure seeing Valerie Taylor onscreen and underwater once again (I grew up watching the amazing documentaries with Valerie and her husband Ron), yet that pleasure was tempered with listening to her compare the oceans that she used to dive in, with the way that they are now.
The heart wrenching visuals of sealife in distress, and frightening facts about how quickly the oceans are changing, is balanced with the hope that, thanks to the amazing work of people showcased here, things can change for the better. It just needs more people to be aware and proactive.
At time of writing all I see on TV is adverts for \’Love Island\’; a vacuous show which will dominate both online and offline chat for months to come. How about you spend a few moments and \’Love Your Planet\’ instead…beginning by watching this great documentary, and then following it up by doing at least one positive thing to help this big blue marble which allows us to live on it…before we screw it up completely.
\”BLUE\” is available now on iTunes, Sky Store, Virgin Media and Amazon in the UK & Ireland, and is released on DVD on July 1st 2019.
