Review: Above the Law 4K UHD
There was a time when I would immediately watch a new Steven Seagal movie. This was of course in the years when he could run (of which he does a lot of in Above the Law), he could fight, he could act (almost) and he didn’t spend most of the movie sat down (see his output from the last decade or so).
Above the Law (AKA Nico) is prime Seagal, leading the way for Hard to Kill (my favourite of his), Marked For Death, Out For Justice, Under Siege, and the unintentionally hilarious On Deadly Ground.
Barring the underwhelming Under Siege 2 and a brief appearance in Executive Decision (great movie), his career nosedived into the cesspit of low budget direct to video obscurity.
However, Above the Law sees Seagal in top form as Nico Toscani; a former Spec Op Vietnam vet (watch out for the flashback footage!) who now works as a Chicago cop and is on the trail of some C.I.A. shenanigans.
There’s some great action scenes, which includes Seagal doing quite a few of his own stunts, as well as a good smattering of humour throughout. All of which never gets boring and has the added advantage of looking great on this 4K UHD release by Toy Robot Video.
For a movie that I watched numerous times on VHS way back when, this 4K release is a revelation, making almost like a first time viewing with all of the extra details I was now noticing.
Get onboard with some early Seagal and add this to your collection ASAP.
