Review: Trick or Treat 4K UHD
I’m not exaggerating when I say that Trick or Treat is one of my all time favourite movies, and has been since I first watched it on VHS back in the 80’s. So needless to say, this 4K UHD release by Toy Robot Video is an instant buy recommendation by me.
The story is a simple one: teenage outcast Eddie Weinbauer (Marc Price) is bullied at school, with only the sounds of his rock music hero Sammy Curr (Tiony Fields) keeping him sane.
Shocked at the news of Sammi’s sudden death, Eddie is given Sammi’s final unreleased album by rock DJ ‘Nuke” (Gene Simmons), which when played in Eddie’s bedroom (which is covered in very cool posters by the way!) brings Sammi back from the dead to raise rock ‘n’ hell on all around him, while also helping Eddie gain revenge on those who bullied him.
Of course things don’t go exactly as planned, and Eddie soon begins to realise that you should probably never meet your heroes, let alone do a deal with them that unexpectedly involves multiple horrific deaths.
Trick or Treat has everything in it for me; a fun narrative, a snappy script (the “hey look, it’s aquaman” line cracks me up every time I watch it), entertaining characters, and one of the BEST movie soundtracks too…seek out the album and turn it up loud.
From watching it literally dozens of times on VHS, to now having this 4K UHD Blu-ray release by Toy Robot Video is an absolute treat…no tricks thankfully.
Much of the movie takes place at night, so the deep blacks and great contrast make details pop out exactly as intended, while the new 5:1 surround sound mix adds an extra layer of immersion and makes those Fastway songs hit harder than ever.
Add in some very entertaining special features, and you have a package that I thoroughly recommend.
