I remember watching The Goodies through the 1970’s and they were a huge part of my love of ‘silly’ comedy during my formative years. So when I was given the opportunity of reviewing An Audience With The Goodies, where Bill Oddie, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graham Garden reunite for a special one-night-only event, recorded in June 2018 at the Leicester Square Theatre, the inner child in me squealed with delight.
The show is split into 2 halves, and part 1 has writer/performer/comedian Stewart Lee reminiscing with Bill, Tim and Graham about the making of the show, stories from the set, how it was received by audiences worldwide, and also about how Stewart loved the show too.
After the intermission, Stewart is replaced by writer/archive television expert Dick Fiddy and more stories from the past are chewed over before finishing with questions from the audience.
It was fantastic to see the 3 guys together on stage, and despite all of them fast approaching 80 years of age, their wit is still as sharp as ever.
It’s a disgrace that the BBC has deemed not to repeat The Goodies in full since it left our screens in 1982, and this is touched upon during a chat where it seems ‘Aunty Beeb’ might be a bit pissed off that The Goodies went to LWT in 1981. Thank God for Network and their release of this and other Goodies titles!
For anyone who grew up laughing their ass off at ‘Kitten Kong’, who went around at school saying ‘Ecky Thump’ while pretending to wear a large flat cap, and who bought ‘The Inbetweenies’, ‘Funky Gibbon’, and ‘Make a Daft Noise For Christmas’ upon release (like I did), this is an immediate ‘must buy’. A funny and informative walk down memory lane with 3 guys whose work should be exposed to as big an audience as possible.
To those of you out there who have never seen The Goodies before, you can use this as a little taster of the comedy treat you have ahead of you when you inevitably get sucked into their crazy world.
