Review: Butcher Baker, Nightmare Maker
4K UHD and Blu-ray: Butcher Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981)
Starting with a car crash, Butcher Baker, Nightmare Maker gets progressively more crazy throughout its 96 minute running time, with an all time bonkers performance by Susan Tyrrell, who completely steals the film and it’s worth buying this fantastic release just for her incredible acting.
However, there is also a hell of a lot more to enjoy on top of Susan Tyrrell giving every scene 200%.
To give away any of the plot would be to spoil what is one hell of a narrative, which includes (but is not limited to) unexpected sex scenes, a homophobic bigoted cop (played perfectly nasty by Bo Svenson), a young Bill Paxton, a gay basketball coach, and some unforgettable deaths.
This psycho-drama/slasher/borderline comedy is one hell of a fun watch and has never looked better than on this Severin Films release, which is available for the first time ever in UHD, scanned in 4K from the original camera negative with 6 hours of new and archival Special Features.
If the hugely entertaining and pristine looking movie wasn’t reason enough to buy, the plethora of special features (both archival and new) make it an absolutely essential purchase, with 3 commentary tracks, interviews and more.
The fact that director William Asher directed 131 episodes of the family comedy ‘Bewitched’ from 1964-1972, makes it even more impressive that he fashioned one of the most crazy horror movies to come out of the 80s.
From the packaging, to the movie, to the special features, this deserves to be in your movie collection.
