Review: Crushed Velvet & the Velveteers – “Good Thang feat. Kim Dawson”
“Ouch!” this one smacks you around the head and makes you sit up and take notice. Kim Dawson gives this 3 minute, deep slice of funk, plenty of attitude. Comparisons with Aretha and the late great Betty Wright are inevitable as Alan Evans’s production has added on some classic southern soul. As writer/producer/multi-instrumentalist and founder of the Alan Evans Trio, he’s managed to bring in some muscle for this one with a beefy brass section and Darby Wolf on keys.
Ms Kim Dawson who has had previous incarnations with the likes of Matador Soul Sounds and Pimps of Joytime seems pretty much at home here and the great news is that it’s just a taster a Crushed Velvet & the Velveteers album on the way!
In the meantime, get over to the Bandcamp page and enjoy.
