Review: Final Recall
Digital HD & DVD: Final Recall (2017)
Five friends go on a weekend trip to a cabin in the woods for some sun, swimming and sex. With impeccable timing, while all the carefree frolicking in the wilderness is happening, an alien invasion begins. The friends early fears though come from a mysterious ‘Hunter’ who is prowling the woods. Is he on their side or the aliens?
I first saw an early trailer for Final Recall (AKA The Recall) many months ago and my initial thought was “oooh, Predator with Wesley Snipes as the Arnie character“. If you watch the movie with this in mind, you will be severely disappointed. However, if you go into it thinking “Without Warning with Wesley Snipes as the Jack Palance character”, then you will be more rewarded.
Final Recall is not a big budget movie and it shows onscreen with passable special effects and acting that varies from good (Snipes) to not so good. Those of you who (like myself) are big Wesley Snipes fans will be disappointed by his onscreen appearance time, probably totalling about 15 minutes or so. Budgetary restraints were more than likely the reason for this, but it is always a let down when an actors name is used as the primary selling point and then not featured as much as you expected. This was a particular disappointment for me, as I’ve been a big fan of Snipes across the entirety of his career and always want to see more of him onscreen.
The narrative plays out slow and steady with the odd little twist here and there, but predominantly the main thread is more character based with a lot of your enjoyment of the movie resting on if you have any empathy for the 5 young friends.
There is nothing outstanding about Final Recall, and I certainly don’t agree with a lot of the backlash that it seems to be currently getting on IMDB! As mentioned above, if you prefer your alien invasion movies more in the style of Without Warning, instead of Predator or Independence Day, then there’s a hell of a lot worse ways to spend your 90 minutes. Plus you get the added bonus of Snipes onscreen again…for however little time that may be.
