Review: Greedy People
Digital Platforms: Greedy People (2024)
Will Shelley (Himesh Patel) and his pregnant wife Paige (Lily James) move to suburbia for a quiet life and for Will to become a policeman. On his first day he’s shown the ropes by Officer Terry Brogan (Joseph Gordon Levitt) who’s more interested in shagging the local Chinese business man’s wife than laying down the law.
It’s still Will’s first day at work, and he somehow manages to kill a local businessman’s obnoxious wife. As he and Terry clean up (and cover up) they find a bag with a million dollars in it.
They make a pact to keep the money, and not tell anyone. As you can imagine that doesn’t work out.
I suppose the ‘Coen’ influence is strong in this film – but it misses the mark, like early Coen Brothers Films, Greedy People starts off as comedy and quickly becomes quite dark with multiple murders all for the sake of money. The many strands of the story become confused and the fact that every single person in this film is ‘greedy’ (which leads to their ultimate demise) is disappointing.
It’s a watchable film, and seeing Gordon Levitt as a baddie is a change but it’s not very memorable.
