Review: Lisa Frankenstein 4K UHD
4K UHD Blu-ray: Lisa Frankenstein (2024)
A directorial debut by Zelda Williams (the great Robin’s daughter and written by Diablo Cody), Lisa Frankenstein has a pedigree of weirdness before she creates a monster. Couple that with the premise of a small town girl who’s different (Goth), living with a normal family and … yes, that old formula. Sigh.
It’s the late 80s and Lisa Swallows (yes, that’s right) is a misunderstood Goth trying to get over the fact that her mum was murdered by an axe wielding serial killer, and her dad then remarried – and her step mother is a middle class bitch. However, she does get on with her perfectly blonde cheerleader stepsister, Taffy (Welsh? Nope). Lisa spends much of her time at the local cemetery, skipping around the headstones and languishing over the statue of a long dead, handsome, young man.
After an unfortunate tanning bed electrocution (do Goth’s do tans?), Lisa reluctantly goes to a party with Taffy, and there she is drugged and is sexually assaulted by a classmate. Humm bit of a switch in tone here.
Disoriented and upset, Lisa goes back to the grave and wishes she was with the dead man. As she leaves a bolt of green lightning strikes the grave and the young man is brought back to life as a lovesick zombie.
I can only describe this as a sort of mixture of Beetlejuice and every Gothy type teeny series on Netflix – like Sabrina and Wednesday, but with a darker (rapey, murdery) edge.
You might think it’s okay for your 12 yr old Wednesday fan, but it’s a firm cert 15 for content.
Not great, but not bad either!
