Review: Roald & Beatrix: The Tail of the Curious Mouse
DVD, Digital & Blu-ray: Roald & Beatrix – The Tail of the Curious Mouse (2020)
Roald & Beatrix: The Tail of the Curious Mouse was shown on sky tv on Christmas Eve 2020 and is without a doubt a perfect Christmas Movie. It’s set in 1922, at the time of six year old Roald Dahl’s (Harry Tayler) father’s death and tells the story of a possible meeting Beatrix Potter (Dawn French) and Roald.
Potter is coming to the end of her career, her publisher is hounding her for her next book but she can’t complete it because she’d rather be a farmer’s wife and not have to write anymore. Much beloved British comedy icon Dawn French plays potter as a prickly old lady who can’t be bothered with anything except her pig and chasing a goose to kill for Christmas dinner.
While in Wales, Young Roald avidly reads Jemima Puddle Duck to distract him from the death of His father and sister.
Roald’s mother Sofie (beautifully played and accented Jessica Hynes) encourages the child to follow his dreams and visit his hero Beatrix Potter with her.
The story is pretty straightforward and it looks and feels very Christmassy, it’s the perfect family film for Christmas with a message of overcoming hardship and appreciating what’s around you.
