Review: Skyfire
Digital, Blu-ray & DVD: Skyfire (2019)
Meng Li (Hannah Quinlivan) and her father (Xueqi Wang) survive a volcanic eruption that takes the life of her mother and many others while working as volconologists.
Despite that horrific experience as a child, Meng Li also becomes a volcanologist and is working at the beautiful Tianhuo Island paradise resort which is based at the foot of the now currently dormant volcano.
Jack Harris (Jason Isaacs) is the entrepreneur who is the head of the resort, and when Meng Li and her team become suspicious of some underground volcanic activity, Harris disregards their warnings to evacuate the island before the situation gets worse.
It is no spoiler to say that the situation does get worse. A lot worse.
Skyfire is a disaster movie that revels in its over the top action sequences and the incredibly dangerous situations that the characters find themselves in…all seemingly with no hope of escape, but thanks to some quick thinking (and heart pounding sequences) they just about manage to.
An amalgam of gloriously kinetic cgi effects and dangerous looking practical effects, director Simon West keeps the narrative flowing in a way that you’re never unsure as to what is happening as chaos abounds across the entire island.
One incredible set piece follows another as you’re taken on a visual ride as heart pounding as the monorail escape that kicks everything off in a crazy unforgettable sequence.
Skyfire is a fun movie, where you can sit back and let the action play out in front of you with a huge smile on your face, all while completely ignoring how improbable everything is.
Make sure to listen to my interview show with director Simon West for some states about the making of Skyfire.
