Review: That Click
Cinema: That Click (2019)
You may not be familiar with the name Douglas Kirkland, but you sure as hell would have seen some of his work at various points in your life.
Douglas has photographed the Hollywood elite (and much more) for over 60 years, and many of his stunning photographs are truly iconic. Covering fashion, photojournalism and portraiture, his subjects have included Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Angelina Jolie and the stars of over 150 motion pictures – The Sound of Music, Moulin Rouge, Titanic and The Great Gatsby to name a few.
This fascinating documentary has interviews with people who have worked in front of the camera with him (Sharon Stone, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Williams, Baz Luhrmann, Andy Garcia and many more), behind the scenes with him, and of course the man himself.
What shines through is the unbridled passion that Douglas has for his art, and it is great to see him on set and how he interacts with the people he is photographing. Building up a relaxed atmosphere where they can be allowed to feel free to be themselves, and therefore allowing Douglas to capture their true spirit.
It is of course fantastic to see many of his photographs and this inspired me to look up more of his work after the end credits had rolled…there’s definitely a book of his I’d like to buy now too!
Wonderful imagery, amazing stories (wait until you hear what happened when he photographed Marilyn Monroe!) and a glimpse into the life of a genuinely nice guy who loves life and what he does, That Click takes you on a sensory journey through the decades.
