Review: The Deep House
Blu-ray & DVD: The Deep House (2021)
Tina (Camille Rowe) and Ben (James Jagger) are a couple of vloggers whose latest adventure takes them into France where they end up scuba diving in a lake to investigate a submerged house.
Expecting to find nothing more than maybe the odd forgotten bit of jewellery, their fears rise when they open a long sealed door in the house and discover what is behind it.
The Deep House is your usual haunted house tale, with the exception of course that everything is set underwater and there’s the added tension of oxygen levels slowly depleting.
Jump scares are scattered throughout, but certain scenes actually create an atmosphere of tension as everything moving in the water takes on an almost dreamlike quality.
Jagger’s stilted delivery of his lines makes it sound like he’s doing a voice over for the entire movie, and you will hear his character’s name being shouted by Tina a LOT of times…to the point where it actually became annoying.
There is nothing outstanding or particularly memorable about The Deep House, it’s premise is intriguing and enough to keep you invested in what is happening on the screen, but as the end credits rolled I was left with a feeling that so much more could have been done with the idea.
The set design is great and there’s some interesting shots utilising the underwater aspect of the narrative. Also, keep watching until the very end of the credits too.
Released 31st October 2022.
