Review: The Others 4K UHD
It’s 1945, and Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman) lives in a huge, isolated house on Jersey with her 2 children Ann and Nicholas who she keeps locked away as they’re ‘Photosensitive’. One day 3 people turn up as servants, it seems that Grace has advertised, and as if by magic they appear. Their dress is antiquated and one of them is Eric Sykes which is a shock in itself.
Grace’s husband is missing, presumed dead in WW2 and the children sleep all the time. Yet no one thinks its weird, while being really weird.
The children claim they can see another child called Victor and Grace can hear booming running footsteps all the time. The house must be haunted….
The Others when it came out 20+ years ago was one of those more unusual films – directed by Chilean Auteur Alejandro Amenabar (who made the amazing Open Your Eyes), it’s well made, looks wonderful, classy even, and had a twisty-turny plot that kept you guessing (okay maybe you can guess, it’s not hard). But for me it has one major problem…Nicole Kidman. I don’t dislike her and in this she’s supposed to play the part of a woman on the edge of madness, but her stick thin frame marching along, and her HUGE eyes and shrill voice, well I have to admit watching it the other evening she really got on my nerves. For the good story and engaging NOT annoying kids, Nicole’s frantic, high stress performance was so one note, I started to feel anxious myself. If only she’d given a more nuanced performance instead of NO 10 SHRILL with a shotgun, I would have enjoyed it more.
