Streaming: Pandorica (2016) To say I have been looking forward to Pandorica is an understatement. Ever since I saw a preview of it at Comic Con Liverpool earlier this year, I have been itching to see the full version. Directed and written by Tom Paton and starring Marc Zammit, Jade Fenix-Hobday, Luke D’Silva, Bentley Kalu and Adam […]
Blu-ray: 5 Dolls for an August Moon (1970) There are times when I start watching a film to review and I already think, “what the hell am I going to write?” Or, “this seems like a Tina kind of film, I wish she was reviewing it” (sorry Tina!). ‘5 Dolls for an August Moon‘ is […]
DVD: Janis: Little Girl Blue (2015) Janis – Little Girl Blue is a new documentary about the life and death of much loved hippie icon Janis Joplin. Janis was the original ‘rock chick’ that blazed a trail across the cultural landscape of 1960’s America. This documentary, narrated by musician Cat Power, is told through a series of letters […]
Blu-ray: Audition (1999) ‘To live means to approach death gradually’. Arrow’s newly restored release of Audition was my baptism of fire into Japanese horror. Made in 1999 and directed by Takashi Miike, Audition has shocked audiences with its graphic and grotesque scenes since its release and has become a critic’s favourite, winning various accolades and being listed […]
DVD: Respectable – The Mary Millington Story (2016) Britain in the 1970’s must have been a really fascinating time in history. In particular the sex trade and distribution of obscene material was so different by today’s standards, it is barely recognisable. The rise of pornographic material led to the rise of Mary Whitehouse and her […]
Blu-ray: Every Home Should Have One (1970) Mention Marty Feldman to me and immediately a plethora of quotes from Young Frankenstein always spring to mind (I still can’t pass a horse without wanting to say “Frau Blücher” to it). For me he was a comedy genius as both a writer and an actor, specifically in […]
Blu-ray: Hired To Kill (1990) There have been some iconic opening shots in movie history; the camera panning down amongst the stars before a huge spacecraft appears from over our heads in Star Wars. Hitchcock’s masterful direction at the beginning of Rear Window which sets up all you need to know about L.B. Jefferies without […]
Blu-ray: Ghoulies (1984) I have fond memories of movies from the 80’s featuring malicious little beasts and monsters. Looking back there was a time when these films were all the rage with probably the most popular of all being the wonderful Gremlins. Critters was also a favourite of mine with its tale of deadly fur-ball […]
DVD: Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me (2014) As a child my parents’ choice of music was nothing short of eclectic. While Mam would whoop it up to Rod Stewart (yes she did think he was sexy), my dad would be humming along to his favourite LP of Cossack Choirs singing songs from the homeland. So […]
Blu-ray: The Zero Boys (1986) New to Blu-ray from Arrow is Nico Mastorakis forgotten backwoods stalk and slash The Zero Boys. Made in 1986 after he had already shocked and confused movie goers with the likes of Island of Death, writer/director Mastorakis goes full-on 80’s action movie here with a healthy sprinkle of hillbilly horror. Imagine […]
