Review: Blast
Blu-ray: Blast (1997)
Otherwise known as DIE HARD AT A SWIMMING POOL.
This was Albert Pyun’s (6000th) attempt at a successful action film. Set around the USA Olympic swim teams kidnapping by shady terrorist (Andrew Divoff) and starring the guy who played Johnny Cage in the Mortal Kombat film (Linden Ashby) as a former Olympian turned janitor who goes all John McClane and single handed tries to stop the imminent tragedy unfolding. We run around grey corridors for most of the film while the FBI bumble around on the outside led by Rutger Hauer’s amputee Native American negotiator (!) Who does win the award for most ridiculous action scene in the history of cinema.
The film itself is about as thrilling and action packed as a Last of the Summer Wine box set as the budget must have been so small that any shooting victims are either cut away from or just fall over with no blood in sight. It’s a forgotten film that is best left forgotten unless you are really struggling for amusement.
101 Films deliver a lovely anamorphic HD transfer and a punchy soundtrack which makes Blast look and sound better than it deserves. This could be fun over a few dozen beers with some likeminded friends….don’t blame me though. Blame Albert Pyun.
