UK audiences rally behind “RRR” star Ram Charan; Debuts no. 2 at UK box office
The critical and commercial success of Indian blockbuster “RRR”, which opened to rave reviews and recently debuted at no. 2 at the UK and Ireland box office (after “The Batman”), comes with news of upcoming film projects for award-winning star Ram Charan. The film’s impressive opening further signifies the passion for Indian cinema in the UK.
“RRR” (meaning “Rise Roar Revolt”) is an epic period action film set in British colonial India in the 1920’s, following two revolutionaries and their fictional journey before they fight for their country. The film stars Indian A-listers Ram Charan, N.T. Rama Rao Jr, and is directed by S.S. Rajamouli. It has been highly praised for its incredible action sequences and stunt-filled set pieces.
Alongside the film’s UK success, it has so far grossed over $132 million globally, making it the ninth highest-grossing film of 2022, and set several other box office records for an Indian film.
Next, Ram Charan will collaborate with director Gowtam Tinnanuri for an as-yet untitled “multi-million dollar” feature film with production house, UV Creations, the company responsible for several “Tollywood” (Telugu language) blockbusters such as “Mirchi” and “Run Raja Run”. He is currently shooting a film by legendary Indian director S. Shankar. Telugu cinema, long recognised as the second-largest film industry in India, recently surpassed Bollywood for its 2021 box office returns to claim the top spot.
Charan has long made headlines as a hugely popular Indian actor and producer, with “RRR” being the latest box office draw. Since his 2007 acting debut in “Chirutha”, he has become one of India’s most recognisable stars and the recipient of several prestigious awards.
