Review: Bahama Soul Club – “Ain’t Nobody’s Business feat. Billie Holiday”. “Never Roam No More feat. John Lee Hooker”
If Bahama Soul Club’s new album is as cool as the tracks they are dropping, then you won’t need a fridge this summer. The German outfit are using some classic samples to create late night, laid back, ultra-cool-as-fuck soul-jazz. On “Never Roam No More “ John Lee Hooker’s growling lament from his 1946 “My First Wife Left Me”. BSC layering over a smoky, dubby, bossa beat.
The choice of Lady Day’s “Ain’t Nobody’s Business” is an answer of sorts to the Hooker’s lament, though not one that sits comfortably. “I’d rather my man would hit me, than follow him to jump up and quit me”. BSC tempering it with nu jazz keys and brass samples.
Oliver Belz and the rest of Bahama Soul Club are reportedly working late shifts in their Portuguese recording studio and let’s hope it’s not too long before we get more of this.
In the meantime pop over to https://shop.buyu-records.com/ to check them out. You supply the bourbon and smokes.
