Review: Save Me Too
DVD: Save Me Too (2020)
After being gripped by Save Me back in 2018, it was with great anticipation that I sat down to watch the latest developments in the life of Nelly (Lennie James) in Save Me Too.
Starting 17 months after Save Me concluded (with an ending that had a lot of viewers still asking questions) Nelly is now 50 and still surrounded by the characters that were so brilliantly portrayed in series 1 by Suranne Jones, Camilla Beeput, Thomas Coombes, Stephen Graham, and many more.
With new characters played by Lesley Manville and Adrian Edmondson adding yet more layers of intrigue to a narrative that once again twists and turns, leaving the viewer constantly wondering what the hell is going to happen next.
Nelly is still burdened by the grief of his missing daughter and still wears the yellow jacket that he promised to keep on until she was found, but both him and the jacket are road weary and tired. The never ending search for Jody and the multitude of other complications in his life could well send Nelly tipping over the edge at any moment, and as the narrative takes him into unexpected and unwanted dark places, he looks over that edge on more than one occasion.
To give anything away about what happens in these gripping 6 episodes would be to dilute the enjoyment of what is once again a superbly acted and written series where your empathy for the characters makes each event that happens in their lives hit home like a hammer.
While not essential that you watch Save Me before watching Save Me Too, it is certainly recommended that you do…and with a series as good as this, the more episodes there are to watch, the more you are drawn into the characters lives.
Lennie James has apparently stated that there could be a 3rd series, and if the quality and emotional punch of these first 2 series are anything to go by, we’re all in for another emotional rollercoaster as we watch what happens with Nelly going forward.
Save Me Too is released on 22nd June 2020.
