Review: Barb Wire 4K UHD
4K UHD Blu-ray: Barb Wire (1996)
Based on Chris Warner’s graphic novel and starring Pamela Anderson as the titular (no sniggering at the back there please) ‘Barb Wire’, alongside genre favourites Steve Railsback, Udo Kier, and Clint Howard, this comic book adaptation looks and sounds fantastic in this 4K UHD blu-ray release from Attitude.
Set during the 2nd American Civil War of 2017, Barb Wire (don’t call her ‘babe’) is the sexy tough woman in Steel Harbour; a city full of crime where Barb makes her living as a mercenary for hire and also owns a nightclub called the Hammerhead.
When her ex-lover Axel Hood appears back on the scene, things become complicated very quickly.
The tone of the movie is very tongue in cheek, with Barb’s monotone narration moving the flimsy narrative forward as fast as possible to get to the next car chase/explosion/fight scene, all interspersed with Pamela Anderson’s cleavage being pushed (figuratively and literally) front and forwards on a regular basis.
Pamela shows some good martial arts skills in the fight scenes, kicking high despite wearing skintight outfits that look like they were sprayed on to her. Though it is a pity the movies budget couldn’t stretch to better wigs for her stunt doubles.
Barb Wire isn’t a great movie, but it has just enough cheesy moments to keep it enjoyable, plus this 4K UHD release makes it look better than it ever has done.
The special features are interesting, though I would have loved a commentary track by Pamela.
