Review: Bulletproof
DVD: Bulletproof (2018)
“The Sweeney meets Bad Boys” is an analogy that perfectly encapsulates Bulletproof; a series recently aired on Sky One and now making its debut on DVD courtesy of Acorn Media International.
Aaron Bishop (Noel Clarke) and Ronnie Pike (Ashley Walters) are undercover cops and best friends, and during this 6 episode narrative arc we see their personal and professional relationships pushed to the limits.
Created by Nick Love (which is where ‘The Sweeney’ part of the analogy adds another layer, as he directed the 2012 version of it), Noel Clarke and Ashley Walters, Bulletproof is a high octane, action packed series that shows it is not just the Americans who can do ‘seat of your pants’ cop shows.
However, Bulletproof isn’t just about the action. The car chases, fist fights and shootouts are overshadowed by the relationship between Bishop and Pike, both superbly played by Noel Clarke and Ashley Walters. Here are 2 characters whom I felt empathy for, and which therefore drew me deeper into their stories and made me care what happened to them.
I loved the playful dialogue between them, yet this also gave a balance to the heartfelt outpourings (usually by Pike) which solidified the bond between these 2 guys.
Various crimes are there to be solved across the 6 episodes, but there are also structural narratives which run throughout the entire series which come together by the end of the final episode. During this time there are plenty of twists and turns, and there were many occasions where I was enthralled by both the action sequences and shocked as the storylines got ever darker.
I’m fairly sure that there aren’t this many shootouts between the cops and ‘bad guys’ in London (please correct me if I’m wrong), but Bulletproof isn’t a documentary about the crime bosses in London, it is pure entertainment, and it certainly kept me highly entertained throughout its entire running time.
It takes a lot to keep me invested in a television series, yet each episode of Bulletproof went by in a flash and had me eager to watch what happened next.
Here’s hoping for series 2 before too long.
