Review: Cyber Hero – Mission Runner
“Cyber Hero – Mission Runner” is a roguelike top down vertical shooter in the cyberpunk genre, with more upgrades at your disposal than you can shake the proverbial stick at.
Released on Android on March 24th, I’ve been playing this for over a week now before release and have already seen how well supported it is by its developer, with quite a few changes already been made and feedback from beta testers acted upon.
Controlling your character via a virtual onscreen joystick that positions itself wherever you put your thumb (or digit of choice), you make your way through a succession of rooms filled with a variety of creatures, both robotic and living, that have just the one function…to kill you.
Luckily you have a weapon at your disposal, which though it begins by firing just a single puny shot, can over time be supplemented by many upgrades which will add: more shots, more power, fire, ice, and a hell of a lot more.
These upgrades are acquired by spending “shards” which your enemies leave behind once you have killed them, with each successive upgrade costing more shards. Once these upgrades begin to take effect, you’ll find yourself creeping ever further through the rooms.
Adding to the tension is the fact that you fire automatically, but only when standing still. This tests your nerves as the various enemies keep moving towards you, all the while firing their weapons in your direction.
Your weapon auto-targets whichever enemy is nearer, so if you want to take out the most powerful and disruptive enemy first, then you’re going to have to be tactical and get as close to it as you can while avoiding everything else.
You can acquire extra shards by watching a 30 second advert (a normal practice in free to play games) after you have died and get double the amount of shards you would have done, or watch an advert to revive yourself and continue playing from the point you died.
Visually pleasing with that “just one more go” addictive gameplay, complemented by a huge amount of collectable upgrades that pushes you on just that little bit further each time, Cyber Hero – Mission Runner is a great little phone game to pass away the time wherever you are.
I look forward to seeing further additions to its gameplay.
