Review: Gioteck™ FR5 Racing Wheel Dock

Back in the late 1990s I owned a Microsoft Sidewinder force feedback steering wheel and pedals, and became addicted to playing Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit and Grand Prix II.

Over the years many advances have been made in how you can enjoy racing games, and so I was very excited when a Gioteck FR5 racing wheel dock arrived at 60MW Towers for review.

The Gioteck FR5 is compatible with PS5, PC, Steam Deck with games that utilise Motion Sensor Support only such as Gran Turismo 7 on PS5, in addition to Steam titles with seamless gyro functionality. So off to visit my Son I went (he owns all of the compatible devices).

While you can hold a controller in your hand and tilt it left or right to turn in compatible racing games, there is definitely a greater sense of immersion (and enjoyment) when holding a wheel instead, and this is true when it comes to using the FR5.

Small enough to easily store when not gaming, yet large enough to give a good sense of actually driving, the 220 degree steering and auto-centering is both smooth and responsive…so no blaming the controller should you spin out on a corner.

Comfortable to use, you can settle in to extended gaming sessions should you so wish, with 3 setup options to suit your environment. It can be securely fixed to any table with the enclosed clamp, or you can lounge on the couch using the lap mount (my favourite), and you can even use it in the most minimalistic way and just hold on to it…though despite its light weight, this option does tend to take its toll on your arms after a while.

With no need to fix to any power supply, just pop in your controller and you’re free to play anywhere…and yes, I DID stand up at one point as I got a little too excited towards the end of a particularly close race.

With an RRP of £39.99, the FR5 is the perfect entry level wheel to help give you even more enjoyment from your racing games. Be warned though, this could well be the gateway to eventually leading you down a rabbit hole where you end up with a full racing set-up.
