Review: Green Street
Blu-ray & DVD: Green Street (2005)
Green Street is an odd film. It stars Elijah Wood as Matt, an American student who now lives in the UK after being expelled from his American University after being wrongfully accused of being a coke head. Matt ends up being friends with Pete (Charlie Hunnam) who is one of his brother-in-laws.
Unknown to Matt his other brother-in-law Steve (Marc Warren) is leader of a football hooligan ‘gang’, and brother Pete likes a good fight at a match too
At a match, Matt declines to ‘ave a bit of bovver’ and heads home, but is attacked by some Birmingham City fans. He’s then rescued by the Green Street gang and brotherly loves ensues with Matt and Pete becoming besties and moving in together.
This is basically a soap opera for football fans, where everything is sorted out with a bit of argy bargy and stabbing and we’re all mates afterwards. I suppose what makes it unusual is the casting of Wood and Hunnam, both ‘pretty’ actors performing against type effectively.
I wanted to hate this film but despite all its blasé male ‘who’s got the biggest cock’ posturing it is entertaining in a very unbelievable and silly way.
