Review: Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Dry Twice
Main character Larry Laffer has graced various gaming systems for over 30 years now, and while this current iteration of his adventures sees him toning down his more over the top sexual puns for which he first gained infamy, he still delivers the classic “nudge nudge, wink wink” humour while off on his adventures.
Picking up directly from its predecessor ‘Wet Dreams Don’t Dry’, the sequel finds him transported out of the 80s and into present day on the idyllic island of Cancum…you can see where the humour is levelled just by that!
Trying to get out of an arranged marriage and find his true love, all while joined by his PiPhone (who is the voice of modern day reasoning with him and tries to correct him on his un-PC comments), this adventure has you meeting and chatting with a plethora of well written characters, all of whom have multiple dialogue choices when conversing with them…some of which may help you on your way, while others may not.
And that is the beauty of ‘old school’ adventure games such as this, wandering around the environments finding people and places to interact with, then trying to figure out what to do with the information/article you have acquired.
The puzzles, while sometimes getting you to scratch your head, are for the most part quite obvious to solve given a little thought. While also being able to take photos of objects with your phone and use them from your inventory as though you actually have them is enjoyable, as is finding blueprints that help you to craft larger items to help you out on your adventure.
There are a few mini-games that you will discover along the way, but it is the core story that keeps you playing until the end, all delivered in a colourful game world that made everything easy to see, even when playing in handheld mode on the Switch.
The Leisure Suit Larry games (much like the point and click adventure genre itself) have always been ones that you either enjoy or don’t, with not much middle ground in-between, and there is nothing here that will change your mind.
However, if Larry has raised a few smiles with you in the past, or if you enjoy some classic point and click adventure gaming with a saucy narrative, then Larry definitely delivers enough to keep you cumming back for more…damn, almost made it to the end without using a rude pun!
Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Dry Twice is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, macOS.
