Review: Shrunken Heads
Blu-ray: Shrunken Heads (1994)
I’d only ever watched Shrunken Heads once before and that was back when it was released for rental on VHS. So I went into this rewatch remembering nothing about it…except for there being the titular “shrunken heads” in it of course.
The story is a fun one, all playing out with tongue firmly planted in cheek. 3 New York kids are bullied by an annoying street gang and are eventually killed after trying to expose the street gangs illegal businesses. However, their Hatiian friend who owns a newspaper stand where they buy their comics, is secretly a voodoo priest and reanimates their shrunken heads to extract revenge on the street gang, plus any other people doing bad deeds.
The heads each develop their own special power, as well as all of them being able to fly. One head is essentially a vampire and bites the necks of his victims. One has electrical powers and can shock people. While the 3rd head makes a flick knife come out of his mouth and cuts people up.
The effects of the shrunken heads flying around and killing people are very basic, but definitely have their own particular charm. Especially when it cuts from green screen footage of the actors heads, to actual miniatures of them.
I’d forgotten that Meg Foster was in the movie and it took me a bit longer to recognise her, but she sure as hell seems to be having a great time chewing up the scenery in her part as a lesbian crime boss.
Shrunken Heads is yet another enjoyable Charles Band produced movie that doesn’t outstay its welcome and raises many smiles along the way.
