Review: Son
Blu-ray, DVD & Digital: Son (2021)
A young woman runs barefoot into a diner persued by 2 men, she escapes and gives birth in a car screaming ‘I don’t want you’. On seeing the baby she instantly loves him.
Fast forward several years to the woman (Andi Matichak) and her son David (Luke David Blumm), he’s now about 10 and she is a teacher living in a very nice home.
She hears a noise late one night from his bedroom and opening his door sees his bed surrounded by people, the door slams, she gets help, and opening the door David is naked and unconscious on the bed. Enter Emile Hirsch as the investigating policeman Paul.
David becomes ill, then recovers, to become ill again and recover by …eating a neighbour.
This isn’t what I’d call a scary film, and I guessed the ‘twist’ in the story right away (I’m annoying like that) but this IS a pretty solid ‘satanic cult’ type film with great performances by the actor who plays David and his mum, she does give the palapable feeling that her love for this possibly demon child is very real, and what is happening is real, or is it all in her head?
All the pieces of the story are tied up neatly at the end, and it’s an entertaining watch.
A Shudder Exclusive, the film is set for its UK Blu-ray debut from Acorn Media International on 11 October 2021 and will also be available on DVD and digital.
