Review: Squirrel With a Gun
‘Squirrel With a Gun’ is exactly what you think it is going to be: a silly, enjoyable, tongue in cheek game where a squirrel runs around with a gun…lots of different guns…and other different weapons.
After working your way through the linear introduction level where it sets up the (admittedly flimsy) narrative of the game and the basic gameplay mechanics, it then throws you into a sandbox world where you are free to go nuts…see what I did there!?
As well as people to kill, the world you are in also has both physics and logic-based puzzles to solve, as well as quite a lot of platform jumping, a lot of which I found frustrating to begin, but soon got my head around the way the physics in the game handles. Having said that though, be aware that when you fall to your death (and you will) be prepared to have to backtrack quite substantially sometimes…especially on the introduction section.
Being a small squirrel with a large gun mean that recoil has a big impact upon your little furry self, but it can also be used to your advantage to help you jump further and higher…essential to find some of the nuts and golden acorns that are scattered across the world which help you to level up.
Squirrel With a Gun is glitchy and can be frustrating, but it is also a short game and there’s a lot of fun packed into it which doesn’t outstay its welcome.
Much like the first Goat Simulator game, this could be the basis for a more fleshed out and substantial series of games going forward.
Available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X.
