Review: The Allergies – Say the Word
GOOD TIMES!
Rackabeat and Moneyshot are here to save the Summer!
To be honest if you haven’t got the Allergies first 3 singles of 2020 (and you fucking well should have!) then lucky you because they’re all here, making Say the Word the essential purchase. A word of warning though, before you start playing just warn the neighbours/housemates that things are going to get loud for a while.
The even better news is that Allergies are not in the business of padding out albums with filler remixes, the opening Hit Me One Time (feat. Andy Cooper) starts a party that lasts a full 46min 31 secs. The Cuban Brothers deliver Latin & Cuba Libre fuelled carnival with Let Them Know. The title track Say the Word has Andy Cooper & Marietta Smith leading us in a floorboard squeaking jump-around and Marietta’s vocal on Take My Love sounds like 60’s go-go boots meets Janelle Monaie (which is obviously as good as it sounds).
Felony took a vocal from a forgotten piece of 60’s New Orleans funk from Sammy Ridgley and turned it into a stone cold Northern Soul style classic that’s been everywhere this summer. Every Trick in the Book is equally effective in the feel good soul department.
Need to catch your breath? I Just Got That Feeling (feat. Andy Cooper) poses the philosophical questions while you sip on a cold one and you are going to need it, you don’t get another chance until Mr Woodnote’s chill out sax on Take Me Back.
After three solid albums, Say The Word looks capable of delivering this latin/funk/soul; collective to a much wider audience and the album is just much as fun as the cover art suggests. Rumour is that the album wasn’t scheduled for release until September but Adam, Roy and Jalapeno Records realised that loads of people have allergies during the summer months. Just make sure that you are one of them.
