4K UHD Blu-ray: The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)

After the murder of his family by Union soldiers, Missouri farmer Josey Wales joins a Confederate guerrilla group to avenge their deaths, but after a peace offering by Union officials to the group goes horribly wrong, Josey finds himself on a lone journey to find peace, only to be befriended by an eclectic group of people who help him complete his journey. One that eventually leads to a brutal confrontation.

The Western genre was all but dead by 1976, but as we have come to know over the following years, Clint Eastwood can make a classic Western no matter what decade we are living in, and The Outlaw Josey Wales is a CLASSIC Western that is just as enjoyable today as it was upon its release almost 50 years ago.

Epic cinematography by Bruce Surtees showcases the beautiful landscapes with earthy colours that bring the scenes to life like never before in this new release, all with a very fine layer of grain that keeps the cinematic look of its original release. Small details in the stitching on leather saddles are now easily visible…as is one close up shot of Josey’s scar where the glue seems to have come off from the top part of it! The scenes in dark saloons and shops are now filled with many more details in the background that I hadn’t noticed on previous viewings. Add to this the option of listening to it with either a new Dolby Atmos mix or its original 2.0 theatrical mix and the decision whether to buy this or not just keeps getting easier…hint: buy it!

The Outlaw Josey Wales isn’t just a great Western, it is a great movie, and this is by far the best ever release of it. A definite buy for all movie fans, with the added bonus of some informative special features.
