Review: V/H/S 85
Blu-ray: V/H/S 85 (2023)
After recently reviewing (and enjoying) 2021’s V/H/S 94, I was very much looking forward to watching the latest instalment in the series; V/H/S 85.
Much like its predecessor, this is another horror anthology that throws all sorts of weird and wonderful stories at you in fairly quick succession. This time it’s presented in a 1980’s documentary style, complete with all the camcorder imagery of the time, which definitely adds to the charm of it…especially for someone like myself who grew up watching movies looking like this…grainy, tracking lines, etc.
Beginning with a bang…well, numerous bangs to be precise…all of them coming from a high calibre rifle, V/H/S 85 hits its stride from the very first story involving young adults having a great time partying at a lake.
The good times don’t last of course before the horror begins, with a couple of early gore effects eliciting a loud and verbal response from me as I watched…before immediately going back and watching them again.
Mexican Gods, P.O.V. serial killings, alien lifeforms, a solo performance art show that goes horribly wrong and psychotic families on a killing frenzy all help to fill the 110 minute running time…all of which flies by…and I didn’t once look to see how much time was left.
While I found this not quite as enjoyable as V/H/S 94, it’s still a movie that I’d happily watch again and it’s made me want to complete my V/H/S blu-ray collection too.
