Review: V/H/S 94
Blu-ray & Digital: V/H/S 94 (2021)
The 4th instalment of the V/H/S horror anthology movies takes us back to the 1990’s, showcasing 4 new stories all wrapped around a narrative (“Holy Hell’) of a police S.W.A.T. team who investigate a mysterious VHS tape and discover a sinister cult that has pre-recorded material which uncovers a nightmarish conspiracy.
“Storm Drain” has a TV reporter and her cameraman enter a storm drain to try and uncover the truth behind the mysterious ‘rat man’, with only one of them emerging and as a much different person.
“The Empty Wake” shows why you should never be in the same room alone with a coffin that ‘supposedly’ contains a dead body. While “The Subject” has a psychotic surgeon who is obsessed with melding the human body and mechanical parts together in the most horrific of ways.
“Terror” is the final story and centres around the First Patriots Movement Militia who plan to carry out an attack using their secret weapon…it’s just a pity they don’t have as much control over it as they thought they did.
One of the great things about anthology movies is if one of them isn’t very good, then it’s never too long before it’s done and you’re onto the next one. However, with V/H/S 94 I found every one of the stories very enjoyable, especially “The Subject” which I’d have loved to have seen fleshed out (no pun intended) into full feature length.
The changes in aspect ratio and the use of VHS noise and tracking lines added to the feel of 90’s nostalgia while watching, and the lively surround sound mix had me turning around on more than one occasion.
Another great entry into this horror franchise
