Review: Who Killed Captain Alex? / Bad Black
Blu-ray: Who Killed Captain Alex? / Bad Black (2010/6)
I first watched Who Killed Captain Alex? on YouTube a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it. So when I saw that 101 Films were releasing it on blu-ray along with Bad Black (which I’d never seen) I was very excited.
Both movies hail from “Wakaliwood” in Uganda, which I’ll leave to you to read up on as it is an absolutely fascinating story about a movie production studio that has an abundance passion and energy, while working on budgets that barely scrape into 3 figures.
Led by writer-director-producer Nabwana Isaac Godfrey Geoffrey and accompanied by producer-star Alan Ssali Hofmanis, they use anything and everything they can find, including the local villagers, to craft Supa (sic) action movies that’ll leave you with a huge smile on your face.
Who Killed Captain Alex? was an assault on my senses that I’ll never forget…the VJ! The action scenes! The Ugandan Bruce Lee! Supa soldiers! CG effects that had me instantly rewinding to watch again and enjoy. Then just when you think you’ve seen it all, along comes Bad Black and introduces an American Doctor who trains to be a deadly killer by a little kid wearing pink crocs and who is called Wesley Snipes, plus you get the Ugandan Schwarzenegger AND Bruce Willis…if this paragraph hasn’t already got you ordering this amazing double bill, then your taste in movies certainly isn’t the same as mine.
Both movies include a running commentary by VJ Emmie, a guy I want to do commentaries for on every movie I own. Add to that directors commentary, behind the scenes, interviews and more, which adds up to a package which far exceeded my already high expectations when I heard about it.
An absolute must buy and Wakaliwood deserves all the support it can get.
