Review: Something in the Water
DVD, Blu-ray & Digital: Something in the Water (2024)
I’ve been obsessed with shark movies since my dad took me to the cinema 2 consecutive evenings when Jaws was released over here in the UK, so when we were offered Something in the Water for review, I was delighted.
The narrative is a simple one; a group of 5 friends all get together at an exotic location for a pre-wedding party, part of which involves getting on a small boat to an isolated island for some ‘girl time’.
Naturally this doesn’t go as well as planned and everyone finds themselves stranded in the ocean with just sharks for company.
For a lean 86 minute movie (including credits), Something in the Water not only takes its time before showing a shark (almost half an hour), but also barely has any screen time for sharks, with most of the running time being taken by catty conversations between the bickering characters.
It helps that the acting is decent, but what doesn’t help is that the characters are so unlikeable…to the point that I was cheering for the sharks!
There are no surprises as to how everything plays out, but a couple of the shark attacks worked well and were effective.
Decent shark movies seem to be few and far between, and I’d mark this one down just for shark movie addicts like myself who just have to watch every one of them. For everyone else, go and watch Jaws again.
Digital download was on August 5th, with a DVD & Blu-ray release coming on September 9th.
