Review: The Chucky Collection Limited Edition 4K UHD
Well, this is a stonker from Arrow! A box set to end all boxsets for Chucky fans.
Now we (as in horror film fans) all know the Don Mancini 1988 film ‘Child’s Play’ telling the story of serial killer Charles Lee Ray, who after being fatally shot in a toy store transfers his soul into the nearest thing… a Good Guys Doll. Poor single mum shop worker Karen Barclay buys this knock off doll from a hobo for her son Andy.
Chucky comes alive, and he wants to put his soul, yep you guessed it… into Andy’s body. It’s a fun, typical 80s horror, made unmissable by Brad Dourif’s turn as Chucky’s bonkers voice.
I had seen most of the Chucky films, 1, 2, then skipped to Bride of Chucky, which I think is probably the most popular of the franchise, and enters the arena of ‘self-knowledge’ where there are more laughs and the main character is aware of what he is, similar to the Freddy franchise, where you have a more serious film that evaporates into self-parody. However, Bride is a re-injection of fun into the franchise and we can thank the amazing Jennifer Tilly who plays Chucky’s Ex Tiffany Valentine for that. I hadn’t seen the 2 end films (Curse and Cult of Chucky) starring Brad Dourif’s daughter Fiona as Nica, while Brad has been the voice of Chucky throughout them all.
The Chucky films mainly follow the story of Chucky trying to get into a human body and exacting revenge on his enemies and …well… killing lots people while quipping and swearing.
There has been some groaning on various websites about Childs Play being the only film NOT in 4K, but that seems the norm now, Enter the Dragon from the Bruce Lee box set and Psycho from the Psycho set were not in 4K, because someone else owns the rights to them.
60MW towers have LOVED watching all these films plus extras. Comparing them again to the Freddy Franchise, I zoned out at #3 with Freddy, but these films are all …fun and very watchable.
