Review: The Curious Dr. Humpp
Blu-ray: The Curious Dr. Humpp (1969)
Boobs, bush and buttocks…3 things you’ll be seeing a lot of in The Curious Dr. Humpp, a truly weird viewing experience that left even my low budget indie movie loving sensibilities in a pile of jelly on the couch next to me exclaiming “WTF!?”.
The narrative (what little there is) centres on the titular Dr. Humpp, a man who oversees grossly disfigured monsters and orders them to kidnap young horny couples and drain their “blood forces of sex”, which the Doctor uses to keep himself eternally young.
The original cut of this Argentinian sexploitation/sci-fi/horror included on this disc is enough to mess with your mind with its bizarre narrative and long lingering shots of peoples feet as they walk that Doris Wishman would have been proud of, but when watching the alternative longer cut of it, complete with newer (and totally gratuitous) softcore sex scenes added, you can do nothing but stare open mouthed and hope that nobody looks through your living room window and sees yet another nipple tweaking, buttock grabbing, hip thrusting scene playing out on your TV…top tip: close the curtains for this one.
I love low budget indie movies, and while 101 Films previous AGFA releases have entertained me, this struggled to keep my attention…that is however until I watched it with Frank Henenlotter’s commentary track on. What a huge difference that made, watching the exact same scenes (curtains closed this time), but with Frank entertaining and informing me all about it.
The Curious Dr. Humpp is indeed a curious movie, and one which my usual caveat on these movies especially applies, so be warned in advance that this is a very niche title indeed.
As always, I’m very pleased that titles like this are given the best possible release and are not left to disappear into the cinematic graveyard forever, so if the more eclectic and bizarre side of cinema excites you, then this is one you should check out.
All of that and I didn’t even mention the talking brain in a jar!
