Review: Welcome to Sudden Death
DVD: Welcome to Sudden Death (2020)
Jesse Freeman (Michael Jai White) is a former special forces officer and explosives expert now working a regular job as a security guard in a state-of-the-art sports arena.
Trouble begins during a basketball game at the arena, just when Jesse has taken his young son and daughter with him to work for the day. A group of terrorists out for revenge kidnap the team’s owner and Jesse’s daughter, killing people at certain points in the game until their monetary demands are met.
With the rest of the arenas security team killed by the terrorists, it is left to Jesse to try and save the day.
So far, so “Die Hard in a sports arena”, and so like many other lower budget action movies that have come for review here at 60MW Towers.
However, unlike a lot of the other action movies that disappointed for various reasons, Welcome to Sudden Death kept me very much entertained throughout its admittedly predictable, but very enjoyable story.
Michael Jai White kicks butt as only he can, with one particular fight move in a gym eliciting an audible whoop of delight from me as one of the bad guys went flying through the air.
Clichéd? Yes. Completely predictable? Yes. Fun to watch? Most definitely.
At a lean 81 minutes long, Welcome to Sudden Death never outstays its welcome, and with enough action set pieces and the always watchable Michael Jai White to keep you entertained, this rises above a lot of similar genre movies that I’ve watched and reviewed recently…I’m looking at YOU Assault on Station 33.
